Today was the first full day of the Flanders Fields Conference, organized by the International Society for Military Law and the Law of War, in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Royal Higher Institute for Defence, with support from the City of Ypres and a range of other institutions. The day's substantive sessions included a panel on legal and policy issues associated with chemical weapons (Robert G. Bell and Daniel Feakes) and another on contemporary challenges of international humanitarian law (IHL) in the conduct of hostilities (Professors W. Hays Parks and David Turns). In the evening, conference participants attended a very moving Last Post at the historic Menin Gate (above). Tomorrow's session will continue with IHL (protection of medical personnel, humanitarian access) and "military justice in difficult circumstances."
