Clerkship opportunity at U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces

Judge Gregory E. Maggs is accepting applications for a clerkship in his chambers:

OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE AS A JUDICIAL LAW CLERK IN 2021-2022

Judge Maggs is accepting applications for one-year clerkships for the 2021-2022 Term of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. The application period runs from July 1, 2020, until all positions are filled.

Law students who will graduate in the spring of 2021 and recent law school graduates are encouraged to apply. No prior military service or knowledge of military law is required. The clerkship would be especially interesting to applicants who seek experience in criminal law and appellate litigation or who are considering the possibility of becoming military attorneys.

ABOUT THE COURT OF APPEALS FOR THE ARMED FORCES

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces is a five-judge civilian court that hears appeals in criminal cases arising in the Armed Forces. The Court has appellate jurisdiction over four intermediate appellate courts: the U.S. Army Court of Criminal Appeals, the U.S. Navy-Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals, the U.S. Air Force Court of Criminal Appeals, and the U.S. Coast Guard Court of Criminal Appeals. These four intermediate courts have appellate jurisdiction over courts-martial within their respective services. Courts-martial are military tribunals that have jurisdiction to try service members who are accused of committing crimes punishable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Courts-martial follow rules of evidence and procedure that are similar to the rules that apply in federal criminal trials in the U.S. District Courts. The U.S. Supreme Court can review decisions of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces by writ of certiorari.

ABOUT JUDGE MAGGS

Judge Maggs joined the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces on February 2, 2018. He previously was a law professor and administrator at The George Washington University Law School for more than 25 years. He was also a reserve officer in the U.S. Army, Judge Advocate General's Corps, for more than 28 years. His experience in the Army included assignments as a military judge at courts-martial and as an appellate military judge on the U.S. Army Court of Criminal Appeals.
