Never slow to prosecute civilians in military courts (move over, Uganda), Egypt's parliament has passed legislation in the guise of responding to the COVID-19 pandemic that would expand those courts' jurisdiction over civilians. According to Human Rights Watch, the Emergency Law amendments sent to President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi "risk broadening the jurisdiction of military courts to prosecute civilians by giving military prosecutors the power to investigate incidents when the army officers are tasked with law enforcement or when the president so orders."
