Prof. Peter Rowe |
Global Military Justice Reform has just received the following sad news from the International Society for Military Law and the Law of War:
Dear Members,
It is with deep sorrow that we write to inform you that our UK Group’s past President, and much liked and respected colleague, Prof. Peter Rowe has died.
Prof. Rowe was the President of the UK National Group in the early 1990's. He was well known in the British Army Legal Services as the instigator of advanced academic training for British military legal advisers, as well as their colleagues from the Canadian Judge Advocate General's Corps, on the Annual Advanced Summer Courses on the Laws of War which were held at the Universities of Liverpool and, more recently, Nottingham.
After retiring from the University of Liverpool (where he was Professor of Law and Dean of the Faculty of Law) in 1994, Prof. Rowe held a judicial appointment as a Chairman of Industrial Tribunals in the UK for a few years, but then returned to academia at the University of Lancaster (where he became Emeritus Professor of Law in 2014). He was also the Inaugural Sir Ninian Stephen Visiting Scholar at the Asia-Pacific Centre for Military Law (University of Melbourne, Australia) in 2002-2003.
Prof. Rowe was a highly respected scholar of military law and the law of armed conflict, and an exceptionally kind and delightful man. He will be well remembered by many members of the International Society (particularly those who were members in the 1980s and 1990s).
On behalf of the Society, we offer our condolences to his family and friends, as well as to the UK Group.
Yours sincerely,
Prof. Wolff Heintschel von Heinegg
President
Ludwig Van Der Veken
Secretary-General
