F. Lee Bailey, who successfully defended Capt. Ernest Medina in connection with the My Lai massacre, has died. The New York Times has this obituary. Mr. Bailey was also successful in Cooke v. Orser, 12 M.J. 335 (C.M.A. 1982) (2-1 decision). The Editor had the opportunity to see his courtroom work in real time during a 1981 motions hearing in United States v. Cooke. He was brilliant, dominated the proceedings, and brought home the bacon for his client.
Sadly, after many famous successes, he wound up disbarred and had to declare bankruptcy. He was 87 years of age.
