First active duty servicemember charged in Capitol riot

A U.S. Marine Corps officer, Major Christopher Warnagiris, was charged in connection with his role in the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. Major Warnagiris, identified in part by his military green backpack and hair trimmed short to the skin, is accused, in part, of pushing past police to open the doors for other rioters. The criminal complaint also indicated that two individuals who identified Major Warnagiris worked closely with him, although the complaint does not clarify if these other individuals were civilians or Marines.

Major Warnagiris is now the the 45th person with military service charged in the riot, out of approximately 440 total defendants. He appears to be the first one who serves currently on active duty.
