The trial of civilians by military courts is forbidden by the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and is strongly disfavored in general by human rights jurisprudence.
Other countries that try civilians in military courts include Uganda, Egypt, Tunisia, Lebanon, and (rarely) the United Kingdom and the United States.
