D.C. Police Retirement Board for the first time recognizes suicide as a line-of-duty death

The DC Police and Firefighters' Retirement and Relief Board for the first time recognized that Officer Jeffrey Smith's suicide nine days after confronting a mob at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, was the direct result of an injury suffered to his head during the riot.  Police Departments do not typically recognize suicide as job related.

The policy contrasts sharply with that of the US military which now treats some 90% of suicides as line-of-duty deaths caused by post traumatic stress, brain injuries and other deployment hazards.
