The Navy is testing technology that may produce transcripts the
panel can review during deliberations. Using artificial intelligence to make
instantaneous transcripts will, ideally, increase the accuracy of testimony
reviewed by the fact-finder while avoiding time-consuming replay of audio
recordings. After a few mock courts-martial, the testing revealed the AI had
trouble comprehending military jargon. Perhaps the new technology will succeed
where humans have failed, but it is hard to imagine even the most powerful
supercomputers making sense of the military’s pervasive use of acronyms. Good
luck!
