The South African Military Court dismissed public violence charges against soldiers who participated in a protest march outside government buildings in August 2009. The protest, which was organized by the South African National Defence Union and was attended by 1000 soldiers, called for higher salaries. At the time, Minister Lindiwe Sisulu called the protests "irresponsible and unnecessary" and encouraged the military union to meet for wage negotiations. While the military court dismissed the charges, Brigadier General Xolani Mabanga said that they could be reinstated at any time.
