Venezuela releases a police chief jailed by a military court

After six months in custody, a police chief jailed by a Venezuelan military court has been released for lack of evidence. Among the charges that had been laid against him: contempt for the National Armed Forces. Details here, courtesy of El Pitazo.

Human rights jurisprudence, including that of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, strongly disfavors the exercise of military jurisdiction over civilians.
