Flanders Fields Conference

Ypres
The Flanders Fields Conference on Military Law and the Law of War concluded today, following a jam-packed array of panels and a visit to the excellent Flanders Fields Museum in Ypres. Two morning panels explored contemporary challenges of international law in the protection of specific groups in armed conflict (protection of medical personnel and rights and obligations associated with humanitarian access), with Stephane Kolanowski, Col. Wynand Korterink, Vaios Koutroulis, Florika Fink-Hooijer, Emanuela Chiara Gillard, and Martina Ghelarducci. The afternoon was devoted to two equally excellent panels on military justice "in difficult circumstances," and featured Alison Duxbury, Lawrence Van Haecke, Yutaka Arai, Elizabeth L. Hillman, Rain Liivoja, Brig. Stuart Lythgoe, Wing Cdr. (ret) U.C. Jha, and Major Patrick Vermette. Congratulations to the organizers for an outstanding conference.
